    Re: Blue? Jays

I've found Blue Jay feathers, and they're most certainly blue, and they are blue jays

    Re: Blue? Jays

No one asked what color the pigments are, they asked what color the feather is. This is really a silly thread because it's entirley a matter of symantics, which is outside the realm of the forum. Blue is blue. You could just as easily argue that the sky isn't really blue (it isn't) but you wouldn't convince many people of that. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it's a duck.  When you pick up a blue jay feather, sorry, it's blue - who cares why?  Now a hummingbird feather on the other hand can appear different depending on the angle at which you look at it. A blue jay feather always looks exactly the same.

    Re: Blue? Jays

You said the sky is not actually blue, it appears that way, it is the same thing. I am a physicist, I know what I am talking about. The optical effects make the blue feathers APPEAR blue.

It is a topic in optics, not in ornithology, although the ornithologist would know what I am referring to.

Actually, sounds like we're getting more towards philosophy :)    What is perception?!  Stick out tongue

Gray Poll>>>I remember reading somewhere that Blue Jay feathers don't actually have any color in and of themselves; that their apparent color is caused merely by refraction of light...can anyone confirm that?<<<

I dont about Blue Jays specifically but I've seen/heard about that with some animals on TV nature shows on more than one occasion.

It's NOT perception. Physical laws are not the same as philosophical interepretation.
