    Photo Survey - Please Read!

Hello. I have decided, because of the events of yesterday (the posting Bird Photos post) that the following post has been made into a survey. I would like to know what everyone thinks about posting photos in galleries that do not belong to you. (even by adding the source) Thanks.

    ZBirdNerd

     Photo Survey:

    1. Do you have a gallery?

    2. If so, do you include photographs in your gallery that are not taken by you?

    3. If so, do you add the source (ex: (C) somebody (Flickr) 2000) to these pictures?

    4. Comments:

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    Yes I have a gallery.

Yes I have posted 2 or 3 photos from Google, labeled as such, for use in assisting members with IDs.

As long as the publisher/owner/original website is listed, I think it is fine.  Passing photos off as your own is plagerism.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1.  No, I do not have a gallery (but have my own website).

    4.  I would not post/use a photo without referencing its source.  And if I did not know the source, I would state that the source is unknown but give as much info as possible with regard to where I found it.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

Yes, I have  a gallery, have only posted my own pictures, and have never really thought about using other photos.

I don't have a problem with members using other photos as long as they  reference the source and don't claim them as their own.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1. Yes, I do have a gallery, Possum Valley Birds

    2. No, I have never placed photos in my gallery that I did not take

    3. I have used photos from other sites in posts here on the forum and may or may not have stated such.  I did not realize that I was suppose to ask permission from the photographer before copying it into this forum but will be more aware of that in the future.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

I have a gallery on my personal website.  It includes mostly photos taken by others of rarities.  All photos are posted only with the expressed written permission of the photographers who retain and reserve all rights.

I also manage a photo gallery on another site for the California Bird Records Committee.  Most were taken by others, but submitted to the committee by the photographers who retain and reserve all rights.

I also maintain a personal gallery on webshots.  All those photos are mine and I retain and reserve all rights.

However public links, such as those above, to any of those pages is fine. Posting public pages on the internet anticipates their linking on other pages and indexing by search engines.  As far as I know, such linking has never been challenged.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1.  I have a gallery

    2.  I don't post anything unless I took the photo

I personally think that galleries should be of photos created by the author only, but that reference photos (from flickr, etc.) are fair game to answer ID questions, comparisons, etc. Saying that, if a person does inlcude stock photos in their gallery, it should be foot noted.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1. I have a gallery.

    2.  I don't include photos that I haven't taken myself.

Comments:  I think the Gallery should be used for your own personnel photos.  I think it's OK to post a link on the forum to help with ID and other questions. If someone did post someone else's  photo on the forum they should be sure to include where it came from.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1) Yes, I have a gallery on this site.

    2) No. Only photos taken by me are posted in my gallery.

    3)  N/A

    4) I think that only photos taken by the owner of a gallery should be posted in their gallery. I agree that it is OK to use photos taken by someone else to be used in this forum to help in identification of a bird, as long as the photo is not copy-righted with instructions not to reproduce the photo anywhere for any purpose without the owner's permission. If the photo is not thus restricted from reproduction, then it may be used to aid in identification, with full credit being given to the owner of the photo.

    4. I really appreciate being able to upload a photo and get help on identifying birds!

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    Hi everyone,

     1.  I do not have a photo gallery.

    4.  Be it in a post or be it in a photo galley a photo that is not one's own should be cited.  There are several styles for citation that you can read about if you google "how to cite a photograph".  I know that I have posted photos from the web to answer a question or pose a question and I don't remember if I cited it or not but I will from now on.  I think it's especially hard for those of us without cameras, or, if there is a question of an exotic bird that we wouldn't have a photo of anyways.  But maybe someone could research what would be an acceptable format for citation to use when posting photos that are not one's own on this website.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1. Yes.

    2. No, my gallery is a place to display my work.

    3. N/A

    4. I wouldn't feel right reposting someone else's work without their specific permission. It seems to me a better policy to post a link so that the work will be displayed in the fashion and place intended by the author.

Also, if a post refers to a photo from another source to illustrate a point in the ID forum, or simply to share for entertainment, I would rather see a link to the original source of the photo so I can see who took it, when, where, etc.

Re: Photo Survey - Please Read!

    1.  Yes - but I'm acutally  using someone elses gallery that didn't have any content in it.  I'm a bit technologically challenged and saw a gallery labeled SC's so I used it.

    2.  No - I don't post other peoples pictures.

    3. N/A

    4.  I think that posting someone elses work is copyright infringement and should not be done unless permission is granted and the source is quoted.   I would think both should be observed.

    4.
